You visited me in my dreams once more

You visited me in my dreams once more,

Fingers clutching at your roots,

Trying to refrain from speaking

Those words I needed to hear

Like a potter needs clay.

I am forced to beg –

Anything

For that sweet whisper.

Just as you reach my ear,

I emerge from the bubbling waters,

Disappointment once more clutching at my chest.

The caterpillar grasps the milkweed,

Dangling a centimeter from the precipice

Between a future and a loss.

Eyes flutter for an instant,

One murmur,

A misplaced breeze.

I am falling towards extinction –

Gone.
